Since Independence in 1962, Jamaica has been deliberating on itself: on who it is and what place it has in the world. With many ups and downs and pains in its own national identity creation, its popular culture imagery generally boils down to a high crime, marijuana, Bob Marley, Dancehall or Reggae music vacation spot. It lacks a more nuanced view to show the layers of this complex country, which can be very different even for Jamaicans themselves.
